Which boiler? It’s confusing – We have the answers

There are three main types of boiler: combi, system and conventional. And it’s pretty confusing. Each one has its strengths and weaknesses, its advantages and disadvantages.

  • Combi boilers – AKA combination boilers – are Britain’s most popular boiler solution, giving you heat and hot water without a tank or water cylinders. They come in gas or electric and deliver unlimited heat and hot water whenever you need it. They’re also relatively small and neat. On the downside your water pressure might go down if you turn on more than one hot tap at a time – so a combi is best for homes you don’t have lots of people needing hot water all at the same time.
  • System boilers – AKA sealed system boilers, have a water cylinder in the airing cupboard but no actual water tank in the loft, good news when you don’t have a loft! You can get lots of hot water from multiple taps at the same time, but the hot water isn’t instant. And it can run out, so you need to wait for it to re-heat. This means they work best in homes where hot water is needed in multiple places at the same time.
  • Conventional boilers – AKA open vent or regular boilers – have a cylinder and a tank. They let you run hot water from multiple taps at the same time. Again, the hot water can run out and leave you waiting for more to hear up, and you’ll need room for both a tank and a cylinder.
  • Condensing boilers – This isn’t really a kind of boiler as such, it’s more of a boiler feature. You can choose a condensing combi boiler or a condensing conventional boiler, for example, both of which are very energy-efficient since they capture some of the heat which would otherwise escape from the flue and re-use it. As a result they tend to be a bit cheaper to run than the rest.

All of these boiler types are energy-efficient to an official standard, enshrined in law since 2010. They’re A-rated for energy efficiency, and at least 88% efficient. The special energy efficiency rating system for boilers, namely the Seasonal Efficiency of Domestic Boilers in the UK system, is designed to help you choose the most energy-efficient type for your circumstances.
